SOMERVILLE POLICE BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY AWARD
is presented for outstanding dedication and effort for the month of January 2013 to
Deputy Chief Michael Cabral, Capt. Paul Trant, Lt. Dan Cotter, Sgt. Scott Whalen, Ofc. Alan Monaco, Ofc. Jason Costa, Ofc. Rob Pasqualino, Ofc. Randy Isaacs, Ofc. Erick Ubeda, and Ofc. Devin Schneider
Several weeks before Christmas, the department learned of a dying wish being made by Rustburg, Virginia six year old Nathan Norman, who is fighting brain cancer. Nathan has dreamed of being a police officer or a firefighter and was requesting Christmas cards from departments across the U.S. Officers in Burlington came up with the idea to form a “blue” convoy and hand deliver the cards to Nathan at his home in Virginia. Upon hearing of this trip, the officers receiving this award immediately volunteered to participate. These 10 officers, along with officers from 75 other departments, made the 20 hour roundtrip. The SPD presented Nathan with a plaque and also made him an Honorary Somerville Police Department Officer. The officers who participated in this trip did not receive any compensation, overtime or reimbursement and truly went above and beyond the call of duty.
